The African Union Commission and European Commission have launched the Call for Proposals for the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (GMES & Africa) Grants. The launching was marked by a joint press conference by the AU Commissioner for Human Resources, Science and Technology, Dr. Martial De Paul Ikounga, and Mr. Thorsten Clausing, Chargé d'Affaires of the European Union Delegation to the African Union.

In his launching statement, Commissioner Ikounga proclaimed that the utilization of Earth Observation data lies at the heart of everyday lives of societies across the world, and that GMES and Africa covers a vast area of knowledge, technologies and scientific innovation that will harness enormous developmental opportunities for Africa. Mr. Clausing, in his remarks, said GMES and Africa will provide many opportunities for Earth Observation actors to work together, realize the benefits of technologies, and make them available to nations and people who will face terrible challenges, notably in Africa.

The launching marks the beginning of the process of implementing the GMES and Africa Grants through proposals from various consortia of applicants across Africa. The Grants will be implemented using the African Union Commission’s procurement and grant management procedures.
